A new program at Rockhampton Zoo is giving zoo-goers the chance to step beyond being visitors and become vital supporters of its cherished residents.

Councillor for Parks, Sports, and Public Spaces, Cherie Rutherford announced the launch of the Animal Adoption Program today, and the unique opportunities it’s set to bring individuals and families.

“Our Zoo holds a special place in the hearts of many, and a number of visitors have asked about an adoption program in the past and how they could become more involved,” Cr Rutherford said.

“We’re really excited to launch this program today and give people an opportunity to directly contribute to the care of their favourite animal.

“Through the program, participants are able to make a one-off financial contribution which will then support animal care and purchases, such as enrichment treats and toys.

“As a thank you, participants receive a personalised adoption package tailored to their chosen animal – which includes a certificate, photograph and bio.

“It’s a wonderful opportunity for people to deepen their connection with the Zoo family, and also makes a perfect gift idea for a loved one who loves Rockhampton Zoo.”

Cr Rutherford said the adoption options currently include four species that are considered more endangered – including the resident koalas, gibbon, cassowary and chimpanzees.

“For our reptilian fans, you can also choose to sponsor our perenties – with more options to come in the future,” Cr Rutherford said.

As well as directly supporting the resident animals, Rockhampton Zoo Director Liz Bellward, said 15% of the adoption program funds will also go toward supporting animal conservation on a national and international scale.

“Rockhampton Zoo has a proud tradition of contributing to wildlife conservation, having donated over $60,000 to projects both at home and abroad since 2020,” Ms Bellward said.
