Announcing our What’s Your Story? writing competition winners

Our 2022 Stonnington Literary Festival opens today, Friday 18 November and goes until Sunday 20 November, and with it, comes the announcement of our What’s Your Story? Writing competition winners.

The competition, offering prizes in five categories, is a much-loved feature of the festival, and this year we received more than 180 entries and have five winners.

Short Story category award: Emily for her story titled The Visitor

Emily’s story about a visit to a fading loved one was praised by judges for its strong structure, vivid writing and poignant twist.

Poetry category award: Tiffany, for her poem Vili Mai

Tiffany’s poem was commended by judges for its rich use of language and imagery and strong emotional pull and it’s not the first time she has won an award for her writing; she took out the short story award last year for Counting Paper Planes.

Both Emily and Tiffany each receive $500 for their win.

Creative Writing category award had three winners:

Younger age category, five-to-12-year-olds: Francesca for her story The Bad Strawberry. Francesca’s delightfully whimsical story, together with illustrations, word play and rhyme, was praised by judges. She wins a $100 book voucher from Jeffreys Books.

Middle age category, 9-to-12-year-olds: Maddie for The Glowing Red Eyes. Maddie’s story was commended by judges for its suspenseful writing and surprise twist. Maddie will take home a Jeffreys Books voucher to the value of $200 for her win.

Older age category, 13-to-17-year-olds: Rakshan for the story Beneath the Mask, which wowed the judges for its depth and maturity. Rakshan wins a Jeffreys Books voucher to the value of $300.

City of Stonnington congratulates all our winners and everyone who entered the competition.
