Annual cattle sales

NT Government

4 May 2022

The Department of Industry, Tourism and Trade’s annual online bull and cow sales will be held in July offering cattle that have been selected for fertility and bred for the Territory’s conditions and markets.

Cattle offered for sale have Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs) and the bulls have passed a breeding soundness evaluation.

The online auction will see Brahman and Tropical Composite highly fertile and climatically adapted cattle on offer, with the bull sale on Wednesday 6 July and cow sale on Wednesday 20 July 2022.

The animals are a by-product of the department’s long term selective breeding program and current genetic research projects. Therefore industry have an opportunity to invest in high-performance cattle bred to be more productive, fertile and adapted to the Territory climate.

The 2021 sale saw 71 Brahman and Tropical Composite bulls bought by buyers from the Territory and Western Australia. The 2021 cow sale saw 137 Brahman and Tropical Composite cows bought by buyers from the Territory and Queensland.

The 2022 auction will be conducted online by AuctionsPlus with a full catalogue provided by Elders. Interested buyers can register at auctionsplus.com.au to take part.

Industry can make an appointment to inspect the cattle from May.

Quotes from Deputy CEO Agriculture, Fisheries and Biosecurity, Luke Bowen

“The annual bull sale is a fantastic opportunity for quality northern genetics to be shared with industry, promoting the production and profitability of the northern beef herd.

“These bulls are the result of years of department research. Over the past few decades, we’ve conducted breeding programs focused on selecting traits relevant to Territory environmental conditions and live export production systems, including fertility, functionality and adaptation.

“Bull selection is critical for profitability as the bull selected today can influence the genetic makeup and performance of the herd for the 10 ten years.

“We want to help this industry grow and diversify, so that it can continue its strong economic contribution to our regional communities across the Territory.”
