Council is throwing their support behind the Townsville Fire as they prepare to host game one of the WNBL grand final series this Saturday night.
The Fire are hosting the Southside Flyers at ‘The Fire Pit’ on Saturday night at 7pm, with Council supporting the game with several game-night activations.
Council is partnering with Pop Up Food Trucks Townsville to provide food trucks, furniture and a white picket fencing for an outdoor dining area, fairy lights, a live singer, orange lights and decorations (fire theme) and a roving fire twirler all to add to the big-game atmosphere
Council is a long-time supporter and sponsor of the Fire and Mayor Jenny Hill is delighted to see the local team just two wins away from a fourth WNBL title.
“I was among the raucous crowd of almost 3,000 people at the team’s semi-final win over Perth last week and it was an incredible atmosphere,” Cr Hill said.
“Council is right behind the Fire, and we will continue to support them both on and off the floor with a number of initiatives across the grand final series.
“We will again turn several Townsville landmarks orange in honour of the Fire, including the iconic Castle Hill, which will be lit up in orange on game night Saturday.
“We have also commissioned new Townsville Fire city flags along the Strand, Fire banners to be erected for visitors coming into Townsville (Billabong Sanctuary and Frosty Mango), as well as around 45 corflutes and over 100 metres of advertising scrim promoting the team around the city.
“On top of all this Council will be leading a massive digital push helping to celebrate the team’s wonderful achievements so far and wish them well for the grand final series.
“Everyone at Council is right behind the team’s #PaintTheTownOrange campaign and I can’t wait to see an even bigger crowd as the Fire hopefully bring home another championship to our city.”
While the Fire prepare for their second WNBL grand final appearance in three seasons, the Cowboys will also welcome a home crowd on Saturday as they look to bounce back from a Round 2 loss to the Broncos with a home win over the Warriors.
“Cowboys and Fire games and other live events have an enormous economic impact on Townsville, as well as showcasing the value of the stadium right in the heart of the city centre,” Cr Hill said.
“We will also be welcoming the Queensland Reds back into town on 6 May 2023 to take on the NSW Waratahs in an exciting double header with the Super W grand final.
“Townsville attracted 1.15million visitors to the city in the past 12 months and Council played a huge role in this by delivering 61 inclusive events for the community, including Anzac Day, NAFA, Carols by Candlelight and Townsville Eats.”
Townsville continues to prove itself as the events capital of the North and Council is excited to again have world-class sporting action on in the city while enjoying the flow on effects it has for the local economy.
