As Australia and New Zealand prepare to commemorate the anniversary of the landing of Australian and New Zealand troops at Gallipoli on 25th April 1915, we also recognise the more than 1.5 million men and women who have served Australia in all conflicts, wars and peacekeeping operations. It is also a time to remember over 103,000 Australians who lost their lives while serving. Lest we forget.
2023 marks the 100th anniversary of the formation of Legacy which began in the trenches of the Western Front during World War 1, when a soldier said to his dying mate “I’ll look after the missus and kids”. This became known as The Promise. Since 1923, Legacy has kept the promise though advocacy, education, financial and educational support. In conjunction with the Lithgow Branch of Legacy, Lithgow Library will be displaying some Legacy memorabilia during April.
This year we also recognise the 50th anniversary of the end of Australia’s involvement in the Vietnam War. In 1973, the Governor-General proclaimed Australia’s role over, but fighting between North and South Vietnam continued until April 1975. Over 60,000 Australians served in Vietnam, over 3,000 were wounded and 523 lost their lives. Lithgow Library is honouring those who served in Vietnam with a special small display as part of their regular ANZAC window display, and a gallery of the Vietnam War Victoria Cross recipients.
There will also be some interesting local historical photos on exhibition to complement the various displays.
