Townsville City Council is proud to partner with ABC North Queensland and local RSL sub-branches to present a broadcast of the Anzac Day Dawn Service this weekend.
Council is encouraging residents to tune into ABC North Queensland from 5.30am for the service.
Townsville Mayor Jenny Hill said it was an innovative way to pay our respects on this important day.
“Things are a bit different this year in the face of social distancing restrictions, however that won’t stop us from continuing a decades-long tradition,” Cr Hill said.
“Council has worked alongside the Townsville and Thuringowa RSL sub-branches and ABC North Queensland so that all of us in Townsville can, in our own way, be together to observe the Anzac Day Dawn Service from the safety of our homes.
“This broadcast will include all of the traditional components of a Dawn Service, including the Last Post, traditional speeches, and a minute of silence.”
Cr Hill said there were a number of ways locals would be honouring the day.
“I’m sure plenty of families will be gathered in their living rooms, out on their balconies, or at the end of their driveways in order to commemorate the day,” she said.
“Anzac Day is a day that is especially important to us here in Townsville as a garrison city, and COVID-19 will not stand in the way of us paying our respects to those who have served our country.”
To take part in the Anzac Day Dawn Service, tune into ABC North Queensland on your radio at AM 630 or online at from 5.30am on Anzac Day for the service.
