South Australians in the market for a new electric vehicle are being encouraged to ‘get in quick’ and take advantage of the Marshall Government’s generous $3,000 subsidy, with applications now open via the Treasury website.
The incentive – part of the Government’s sweeping reforms to help drive the take-up of zero and low emission vehicles – will be available for 7,000 eligible new battery electric and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles registered in South Australia from 28 October 2021 (when the new Motor Vehicles (Electric Vehicle Levy) Amendment Bill 2021 passed State Parliament).
That means local motorists who may have ordered a new eligible battery electric vehicle prior to that date but are still waiting for delivery – and therefore, haven’t registered the vehicle yet – will still be able to apply for the subsidy.
Treasurer Rob Lucas said the important reforms had the backing of key industry groups, including the RAA.
“This is a green light for South Australians who may have been considering purchasing a new electric vehicle, to take advantage of the generous incentive now on the table,” said Mr Lucas.
“We’ve consulted widely with industry, manufacturers and other interest groups who have supported our critical reforms to help drive the take-up of environmentally friendly zero and low-emission vehicles in South Australia.”
There will be a price cap of $68,750 (inc GST) to provide an incentive to bring lower-priced electric vehicles to the market and avoid subsidising expensive electric vehicles.
Mr Lucas said the Marshall Government had already made the single largest investment in electric vehicles in the state’s history through its $18.3m Electric Vehicle Action Plan – announced as part of the State Budget 2020-21.
Other incentives (part of a total new reform package worth approximately $22.7 million) include a 3-year motor registration fee exemption for new battery electric and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles first registered from 28 October 2021 up until and including June 30, 2025. The exemption will apply for three years from the vehicle’s date of purchase.
The subsidy and registration fee exemption will not be available for plug-in hybrid electric vehicles or second hand vehicles.
