Applications are now open for the state’s biggest community Christmas event – the Myer City of Hobart Christmas Pageant.
The 41st event will be held on Saturday 18 November 2023 following its traditional path around Hobart’s central business district.
Hobart Lord Mayor Anna Reynolds said this was one of the greatest days on the capital’s calendar.
“Last year’s milestone event attracted 25,000 Christmas lovers to watch the pageant,” Cr Reynolds said.
“It was the pageant’s return after a three-year Covid hiatus, and it was obvious how much it was missed and what a loved event it is.”
Myer Store Manager Hobart Kathleen Kelly said the famous department store would be continuing its sponsorship of the pageant.
“The entire Myer team is very excited to be part of the much-loved Christmas Pageant this year – it truly brings the magic and joy of Christmas to life in the City,” Ms Kelly said.
“It is such an institution in Hobart and something that has been enjoyed by generations.
“As the major sponsor of the event, we can’t wait to be part of the fun and excitement that it brings to the City and this year’s event is sure to be the biggest and best one yet.”
Last year there were 40 floats for 40 years, with about 1185 people participating in the event.
Myer City of Hobart Christmas Pageant director Sybil Edwards said applications were now open for expressions of interest to participate.
“We’re so excited here at council to be working towards another wonderful Christmas Pageant,” Ms Edwards said.
“If you think your organisation or community group can spread some Christmas magic or festive vitality – we need you to apply now.
“This year the theme is simply back to Christmas or Community Celebration!”
Hobart Creative City Portfolio Chair John Kelly said the pageant marked the start of the run up to the festive season.
“It is not just the size of the pageant, but the diversity of floats and participants,” Cr Kelly said.
“From sporting clubs to community groups, dance schools and multicultural organisations this is one truly spectacular event that even the biggest Christmas Grinch would enjoy.”
