A North Queensland Apprentice of the year is calling on job seekers to help build a city of the future as Council opens their doors for their 2025 apprentice intake.
Council electrician Sean Malcolm said completing an apprenticeship at Townsville City Council set him up for success with real-world experience, skills and excellent work-life balance.
“There’s so much variety working at Council, one day you could be working in the water treatment plant, the next day you’re working on traffic lights or you’re on the way to Magnetic Island or the Strand to do maintenance,” Sean said.
“I’ve had the opportunity to work on anything from domestic, commercial and industrial electrical installations while learning from some of the most experienced tradespeople in the business.
“Not only did I complete my electrical trade with Council, but now I’m onto my second apprenticeship in instrumentation and would definitely suggest anyone thinking of applying for an apprentice to give it a crack.
“I’ve met some amazing people, learnt skills that will set me up for life, taken out awards for the knowledge I’ve gained and get great conditions and work-life balance, what’s not to love?”
Council CEO, Joe McCabe said applications were open for several sought-after trades and professions.
“We know there is a skills shortage in Townsville of some vital trades and professions, which is why Council’s program isn’t only about addressing the organisation’s future needs but also the needs for the community,” Mr McCabe said.
“We are proud to help those entering or re-entering the workforce gain nationally-recognised qualifications and experience in their chosen disciplines while also helping to keep local talent in Townsville, close the skills shortage gaps and grow our regional workforce.
“Some of the disciplines we are looking for this year include apprenticeships in boiler making, parks and gardens, electrical instrumentation, auto electrical, heavy vehicle mechanics and more.
“These roles are essential if we are going to continue to grow Townsville and North Queensland.”
