APRA releases new Monthly Authorised Deposit-taking Institution Statistics for July 2019

The Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA) has released its Monthly Authorised Deposit-taking Institution Statistics (MADIS) for July 2019. This is the first edition of the new MADIS publication, which replaces the Monthly Banking Statistics (MBS).
MADIS includes an expanded data set covering domestic and foreign banks, building societies, larger credit unions and other authorised deposit-taking institutions (ADIs).

Key loans and deposits statistics for the industry in the month ended July 2019:

June 2019July 2019Change
Total residents loans and finance leases$2,762.4 billion$2,766.4 billion+0.1%
Total loans to households$1,853.4 billion$1,852.3 billion-0.1%
Housing loans: Owner-occupied$1,073.5 billion$1,075.0 billion+0.1%
Housing loans: Investment$647.4 billion$647.4 billion
Total residents deposits
$2,050.1 billion
$2,073.0 billion
+1.1%
MADIS is conceptually similar to MBS, but benefits from the improvements in data quality inherent in the Economic and Financial Statistics (EFS) data collection.

There has been a significant shift from owner-occupier to investment housing loans for the banks reporting in both the MADIS and MBS publications, which was expected due to a change in the definitions under the new EFS reporting.

The change in aggregates between MBS and MADIS below includes the expanded set of ADIs:
