  • Architect appointed to deliver Perth Aboriginal Short Stay facility located in Cannington
  • Engagement with traditional owners and local community to be undertaken

Western Australian-based architect Iredale Pederson Hook Architects have been appointed to design the Perth Aboriginal Short Stay facility in Cannington.

The Perth Aboriginal Short Stay Accommodation project will be located on a 7,000 square metre site in Hamilton Street, Cannington, chosen for its size and proximity to amenities, services and public transport.

Aboriginal Short Stays are designed to provide culturally appropriate and affordable accommodation for people who travel to Perth or regional centres to access services, and for business, cultural or family reasons.

Iredale Pedersen Hook Architects was established in 1999 and is globally recognised for its work with Aboriginal communities throughout WA, including the Bilya Koort Boodja Centre for Nyoongar Culture and Environmental Knowledge, WA Museum galleries, Yagan Square and Manatji Place.

The architects will work with Aboriginal people and other stakeholders when developing the building and landscaping design of the Perth Short Stay to inform and guide the inclusion of cultural stories and Aboriginal stories in its development.

WA’s existing regional Short Stay facilities in Kalgoorlie-Boulder, Derby and Broome have welcomed thousands of Aboriginal visitors every year and greatly reduced the incidence of rough sleeping in the regional centres.

As stated by Housing Minister John Carey:

“Iredale Pedersen Hook Architects will consult with stakeholders across Western Australia to design a safe and culturally appropriate accommodation facility for Aboriginal people visiting Perth to access services or for business, cultural and family reasons.

“The architect is recognised globally for its work with Aboriginal communities throughout Western Australia.

“WA’s existing Aboriginal Short Stays have been critical in improving outcomes for Aboriginal people in the regions by providing a safe and secure place to stay.

“The establishment of new Aboriginal Short Stay Accommodation services in Perth, Geraldton and Kununurra will ensure safe, culturally-considered short-term accommodation is available to support Aboriginal visitors from regional, remote and metropolitan areas.”

As stated by Aboriginal Affairs Minister Dr Tony Buti:

“Our Government is proud to announce that locally based company Iredale Pedersen Hook Architects has been appointed to design the Perth Aboriginal Short Stay Accommodation.

“The establishment of this Short Stay Accommodation will support the McGowan Government’s Aboriginal Empowerment Strategy and Closing the Gap Implementation Plan, by providing a safe, affordable and culturally appropriate place for Aboriginal people to stay when visiting Perth to access important services, such as health and education, and attend culturally important events.”

As stated by Cannington MLA Bill Johnston:

“This is a great location for a much-needed facility which will provide culturally appropriate accommodation right here in Cannington.

“The architects will undertake extensive consultation with traditional owners and the local community to ensure the best possible facility can be delivered.”
