DWA Architects has been selected to design a performing arts centre and cafeteria upgrades at Wanneroo Secondary College.
The project will see the school’s former sports hall converted into a cutting-edge performing arts centre and refurbishment of the existing cafeteria will provide spaces for students to relax and socialise in during breaks, while also creating local jobs in the process of construction.
The facilities will allow the school to expand its popular specialist programs in drama, dance and music, and students will have the chance to entertain larger audiences in the brand new centre.
With the latest features, students will have exciting opportunities to develop the skills required to move into employment in the performing arts industry.
The brief to guide the architect includes a theatre with 250 retractable seats, a music and drama studio, green rooms, a bio box, a general learning area, store rooms, a staff office and landscaping.
The refurbishment of the cafeteria will include refurbishment of the outdoor seating area and associated landscaping.
With the project now in the planning stage, construction is expected to start in October 2021 with completion anticipated in October 2022.
The performing arts centre and cafeteria upgrades are part of the McGowan Government’s WA Recovery Plan and are expected to create more than 18 jobs.
As stated by Education and Training Minister Sue Ellery:
“I’m excited that students at Wanneroo Secondary College will be able to hone their creative skills and prepare for jobs in the performing arts industry in a brand new centre.
“The McGowan Government has committed to major additions and refurbishments at 28 secondary schools at a cost of $10.7 million in 2020-21 and $84.7 million over the next four years.”
