Are you ready to rebel?

Get your best PJs ready for Wodonga Library’s extra special night-time Storytime on Thursday.

Children and parents alike are invited to dress in their PJs (if they wish) to join us for a night-time Storytime reading of Goodnight Stories for Rebel Girls, a book that introduces us to 100 remarkable women and their extraordinary lives.

What if the princess didn’t marry Prince Charming but instead went on to be an astronaut or an activist? What if the jealous stepsisters were supportive and kind? And what if the queen was the one really in charge of the kingdom?

A selection of stories will be shared and discussed by Border men and women who are rebelling against gender stereotypes to succeed in their chosen pursuits.

One such person who is doing just this is 16-year-old Grace McCowan, the only female motocross racer in Albury-Wodonga.

Grace remembers her friends being “surprised more than anything” when she first took up the sport six years ago.

“It was natural for me because my brother and dad are both involved in the sport,” she said.

Grace has won club titles as well as state awards and plans to continue with the sport.

While being the only female motocross racer in the Albury-Wodonga region does not phase the Wodonga Senior Secondary College student, she would like to see other females involved in motocross.

“It’s a great sport and we can’t let boys have all the fun,” Grace said.

Those attending Storytime will get an up close look at Grace’s bike before she reads a story about deaf motocross racer, Ashley Fidek who continues to excel in her sport despite being hearing impaired.

The other guest readers include Atosha Birongo (UNICEF Australia Young Ambassador and 2018 RED Carpet Youth Ambassador award winner), Wodonga Deputy Mayor and Cr Kat Bennett, Stephen Montgomery (Men’s Behaviour Change Co-ordinator at Gateway Health) and Raquel Vogel (Victoria Police youth officer).
