Art After Dark: Beyond Gallery Walls

In anticipation of its re-opening on Monday 22 June, Hamilton Gallery has collaborated with Hamilton Performing Arts to develop an activation project designed to both celebrate art and culture and delight the community.

‘Art After Dark’ is a large scale projection, visible from Brown Street on the exterior of the Gallery building, which will host a number of displays over the coming weeks. The projection will change regularly and can be viewed every night between 5.30pm and 10.30pm.

In addition to the large scale display, a number of shopfronts along Gray Street will host further pop-up projections. These displays will present a multitude of different artworks and films including video art from the Gallery collection and silent films including, The Story of the Kelly Gang (1906).

Newly appointed Hamilton Gallery Artistic Director, Joshua White said The ‘Art After Dark’ activation project aims to remind the community that the Gallery expands beyond its walls.

“The Gallery team want everyone to be excited about art and culture and we want to engage the public in new and captivating ways. This is just the first in many more projects to come,” White said.

Southern Grampians Shire Council Manager Cultural Arts, Amy Knight said this project brings the talented cultural teams from the Gallery and Hamilton Performing Arts together.

“We’re pleased to bring our teams together for the first time to work collaboratively to provide added benefit and joy to the broader community. Both the Gallery and Performing Arts have done an amazing job bringing this project to fruition and the community should look forward to other initiatives such as this into the future,” Knight said.

During the Gallery’s closure period, it has undertaken a number of minor building improvements including a new permanent Gallery Shop and children’s activity space on the ground floor. Work has also been completed on developing the future exhibition program, collection storage re-configuration, development of online digital content and public programs.

Hamilton Gallery will open its doors for visitors from Monday 22 June 2020 observing its regular opening hours of 10am – 5pm weekdays, and 10am – 2pm on weekends. A number of additional precautions will be in place to safeguard the community against the spread of COVID-19 aligned with state government guidelines. Public programs, such as exhibition openings and workshops, will be on hold until further notice.
