Art Gallery celebrates women with exhibition of prominent female artists

To coincide with International Women’s Day on Sunday 8 March, Griffith Regional Art Gallery will proudly host its next exhibition Each for Equal.

This exhibition references the 2020 International Women’s Day theme and hashtag #eachforequal. The exhibition will showcase prominent female visual artists living and practicing in the Western Riverina.

Arts and Museum Manager, Raina Savage said, “International Women’s Day is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. It also marks a call to action for accelerating women’s equality. To celebrate this important occasion the Gallery has dedicated an exhibition to recognising the artistic excellence of women artists in our region.”

“We have selected 10 female artists with diverse backgrounds and artistic practices. The Artists are: Sophie Chauncey, Veronica Collins, Linzie Ellis, Pam Kent, Sarah McEwan, Janine Murphy, Anthea da Silva, Lisa Taliano, Diane Tarr, and Kerri Weymouth. Many of these artists will be well known to our audience for producing aesthetically beautiful as well as conceptually compelling artworks,” Ms Savage said.

The exhibition will open at the Gallery on Friday 21 February at 6pm with complimentary refreshments and wine from sponsors Doug and Julie McWilliam.

To increase viewers’ appreciation of the works, the Art Gallery is also offering an enticing program of public talks.

Public Programs Officer and art historian Anthea da Silva will present “A Short Herstory of Art” illuminating fascinating elements of the untold history of female artists, on Thursday 27 February at 6pm, with complimentary refreshments and McWilliam’s wines.

Ms da Silva said, “We are also offering a Meet the Artists event on Saturday14 March at 11am with a complimentary morning tea. This will be a great opportunity to learn more about the ideas and inspirations behind the artworks in the exhibition.”

The Each for Equal exhibition runs from Friday 21February until Sunday 29 March. All events are free.
