A new Living Arts Space exhibition, Cloak, celebrates the many ways textiles are used in our daily lives with individual interpretations from six artists.
Exhibition curator Amy Carr-Bottomley said textiles were complex and multi-faceted materials.
“Textiles are often taken for granted and yet they play an important role in our daily lives,” Ms Carr-Bottomley said.
“Steeped in cultural and familial traditions, textiles offer warmth, protection, ritual, symbolism, style, and comfort.
“This free exhibition displays six different artists individual interpretations of the word ‘cloak’ which explore the wonderous multifunctionality of the textile as a material and as a creative expression.”
Works for the exhibition have been created by Ilka White, Catherine O’Leary, Roz Effenberg, Pam Barnes, Amy Conly and Trina Dalton Oojges and there will also an opportunity to see the artists weave a new collaborative piece.
The front windows at the Bendigo Visitor Centre will house a large tapestry warp for Cloak artists who will be weaving live, for people to watch and learn about the process of creative weaving.
“Residents and visitors will be able to see this from the street and they will be invited into the space to contribute to the weaving when an artist is present.
“There will also be opportunity to participate in the weaving process during the exhibition opening celebration tomorrow afternoon from 5pm to 7pm on Friday June 16. All are welcome.”
The Living Arts Space is in the Bendigo Visitor Centre, 51-67 Pall Mall. Open 9am to 5pm daily (except Christmas Day).
