If you’re feeling inspired after a month without plastic and you’re ready to continue, you can discover some of the great things previous Plastic Free July ‘graduates’ chose to do next and see how easy it can be:
- . Buying loose fruit and veggies in your own mesh produce bags can save a huge amount of unnecessary plastic waste.
- – flour, rice, pasta, grains, and oils are all available, as are detergents and shampoos. Just remember to BYO jar, box or bag.
Other tips on reducing waste
- Many bakeries will slice and bag your bread in paper if asked. Or BYO reusable bread bag.
- Ask your local butcher or deli if they will put meat into containers you bring from home.
- Switch to loose-leaf tea and avoid tea bags, some supermarkets sell in boxes or try a bulk food store. Ginger, fresh lemon slices or mint from the garden make relaxing alternatives.
- Have a look in your rubbish and recycling bins. What are the most common plastic items? Bread bags? Coffee cups? Plastic packaging from fresh produce? Meat trays. There are many alternatives to these.
It might take a little more effort but many people report feeling a sense of satisfaction seeing their bin less full. Small changes can make a big impact.
