A Northern Territory Police officer was assaulted while on duty in Darwin City in the early hours of Sunday morning.
Police attended Edmunds Street in the front of a licenced premises following reports of disturbances in the street around 3:45am.
As a woman was being apprehended for disorderly behaviour, a 19-year-old woman approached police and allegedly hindered the apprehension. During this incident, a police officer was allegedly kicked in the head. The 19-year-old woman was later arrested and charged with Hinder Police and has been bailed to appear in the Darwin Local Court on 21 April 2022.
The assault on the police officer remains under investigation and anyone who may have knowledge of the incident is urged to call CrimeStoppers on 1800 000 333.
Superintendent for the Darwin Division, James O’Brien said, “Our police work hard to keep our community safe. Police are on the streets dealing with the worst of the worst every day and to have the people they serve and protect assault them for doing their job is disgraceful.
“Not only was the officer set upon, the large riotous crowd that had gathered started hurling abuse at the police. It is clear from the video footage of the incident that a large proportion of the crowd was drunk,” Superintendent O’Brien said.
“Police will be working closely with a number of government and non-government agencies in an effort to put a stop to the continued riotous behaviour being experienced in and around Edmunds Street.”
Police will be reviewing the incident very closely to determine whether any Liquor Act (2019) breaches have occurred.
