Assistant Minister visit to Norfolk Island

Dept of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Communications

I am looking forward to visiting Norfolk Island from 3-6 February, where I will meet with a range of stakeholders from across the community to discuss and explore our shared priorities for the future sustainability of Norfolk Island, and the opportunities this presents.

Much has happened since my last visit, including the beginning of the long-term partnership with Queensland to deliver state-type services to Norfolk Island. I am keen to meet with staff from the Norfolk Island Health and Residential Aged Care Service (NIHRACS) and the Norfolk Island Central School (NICS), and thank them personally for their positive contributions and work in supporting the new service delivery arrangements.

Since I became Assistant Minister for Territories, our government has distributed significant funding in community infrastructure upgrades for Norfolk Island, including the $5.5 million economic stimulus package that has seen the delivery of important projects such as the Lions Park Playground and upgrades to sporting and recreational facilities, including the new sporting pavilion at NICS.

From infrastructure upgrades to airport improvements, I welcome the opportunity to officially open these important projects, joined by Administrator Eric Hutchinson, and seeing how these investments in the future are making Norfolk Island an even better place to live and visit.

During my visit, I will have discussions with various community leaders and representatives from Norfolk Island’s business sector.

Over the past two years, the Australian Government has supported local businesses through the disruptions caused by the pandemic, through broader Government payments and the tailored business relief scheme delivered through Norfolk Island Regional Council. As demonstrated by the recent COVID outbreak on Norfolk Island, we need to continue to share experiences and learnings on the road to recovery as we continue to adapt to living with COVID-19.

I am very much looking forward to experiencing again first-hand the extraordinary terrestrial and marine environments of Norfolk Island, and meeting with many of you in person once more.
