- $4 million State Government investment delivers assisted living facility for Parnpajinya
- The new facility will accommodate Parnpajinya residents, who will now have greater access to community and social services
Residents from the Parnpajinya community will now have greater access to community and social services, following the opening of Jirninyjarri Maya – a new assisted living facility in Newman.
The project, which received $4 million in State Government funding, including a Lotterywest grant, involved the refurbishment of properties to provide safe and culturally appropriate accommodation for residents of the Parnpajinya community.
The existing facility was gifted by BHP to East Pilbara Independent Support Incorporated, who have been engaged as the Community Coordinator to provide wraparound services to support the residents.
The Pilbara Development Commission has worked closely with the residents of the community and other key stakeholders to complete the refurbishment and to develop a transition plan that meets the current and future needs of the community.
Parnpajinya is one of six communities within the Pilbara Town Based Reserves project, which is led by the Pilbara Development Commission in partnership with the Regional Services Reform Unit.
As stated by Regional Development Minister Don Punch:
“The Pilbara Development Commission has worked hand in hand with the residents of Parnpajinya and key stakeholders to create a long-term approach that supports the aspirations of the Parnpajinya community.
“The opening of Jirninyjarri Maya is the first step in supporting residents to have greater access to community and social services and improved living conditions.
“All residents of Jirninyjarri Maya will be provided with wraparound services to support them in making significant life changing decisions about their futures including re-engaging with services to improve health and wellbeing, lifestyle, education, employment and economic development opportunities.
“This new facility is part of the Pilbara Town Based Reserves project, which is a major initiative of the State Government to improve the lives of Aboriginal people living in the Pilbara.”
As stated by Pilbara MLA Kevin Michel:
“I’m really pleased that this new assisted living facility will accommodate Parnpajinya residents and provide greater access to community and social services.
