Council has approved a variety
of trial activities and minor capital works to breathe new life into Little
Malop Central over the next three to six months, following consultation with
Victoria Police, community groups, traders and property owners.
The improved space will
feature three precincts, with a focus on live entertainment and events; socialising
and eating; and a children’s play area.
The public toilet will
be removed and replaced with a raised performance space for entertainers.
The City will reinstate
the water feature and install fairy lights, children’s play equipment, new
planter boxes and seating. Works are expected to start within weeks.
Maintenance and
monitoring of the area will be increased.
Council has set aside $315,000
to carry out these short-term solutions, which were put together following a
successful notice of motion from Councillor Eddy Kontelj in June 2019.
Councillor Bruce Harwood – Mayor
These trial actions are aimed
at reinvigorating the mall area, making it more inviting to visit for residents
and tourists and bringing it in line with Geelong’s other vibrant spaces. The results of the trial will
help shape the long-term master plan for the space, which will involve
extensive community consultation.
Councillor Eddy Kontelj
My notice of motion in June was
about taking back ownership of the mall; and installing consistent actions and continuous
activation initiatives.These activations and minor
capital works aim to make the space more engaging, appealing and safe, and
deter those who choose to intimidate or cause fear in others.
