Australia makes gains on AV policy and legislation

The ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾ Transport Commission (NTC) today welcomed the KPMG 2019 Autonomous Vehicles Readiness Index that shows Australia is progressing well on automated vehicle (AV) policy and legislation.

The report compared selected nations on progress and capacity for adopting AV technology.

‘Australia gain[ed] the top score on regulations supportive of AVs and there have been broader signs of change on policy and legislation’, the report stated.

The report also noted that Australia’s performance could be boosted by the recent establishment of the Office of Future Transport Technologies, as well as efforts by states.

NTC Acting Chief Executive Geoff Allan said the NTC’s work on end-to-end regulation to support the safe, commercial deployment of automated vehicles puts Australia in a strong global position to embrace these technologies as they become available.

‘We are working with the federal government and states and territories on a nationally-consistent approach to regulation to ensure we are ready for the commercial deployment of automated vehicles in Australia.’

‘This will ensure that Australians can gain the safety benefits of these technologies as they become ready to deploy’, Dr Allan said.

NTC continues to develop the regulations to prepare Australia for automated vehicles, including laws for safety and injury insurance coverage.
