Australia’s weather for New Year’s Eve

Australians will ring in the New Year in warm conditions in many places across the country, according to the Bureau of Meteorology’s forecasts.

‘We are continuing to see the impact of a high pressure system across much of Australia’s mainland, with heatwave conditions forecast for much of Western Australia, the Northern Territory, western Queensland, South Australia, most of New South Wales and north-east Victoria,’ meteorologist Diana Eadie said.

‘The heatwave is contracting inland at the moment, however, so Australians living near our coasts will have slightly cooler conditions for New Year’s Eve compared to the preceding days.’

The Bureau is continuing to monitor several tropical lows embedded in a monsoon trough over northern Australia.

‘A severe weather warning, flood watches and flood warnings have been issued for areas in Queensland’s far north, and we encourage people to keep a close eye on these in the coming days,’ she said.

‘There continues to be a moderate chance that a tropical cyclone will form in the northern Coral Sea over the next few days, increasing to high from mid-week.’

The Bureau is also monitoring the potential for thunderstorms to affect Sydney tomorrow afternoon and evening.

‘We encourage people in Sydney planning to attend outdoor celebrations to keep across weather forecasts and warnings.’
