Australian and Indonesian universities launch innovative two-degree program in Jakarta

The University of Newcastle, Binus University and Nurture Higher Education (UK) have partnered to offer a unique joint teaching program for Indonesian students.

The initiative enables students to complete business and commerce subjects and receive bachelor degrees from both universities, delivered entirely in English at the Binus University campus in Jakarta.

Students benefit from the opportunity to complete an Australian degree in Indonesia with the option to transfer to the University of Newcastle’s Australia or Singapore locations at any time with full recognition of prior studies.

Students on the program must satisfy the entry requirements of both university partners in order to graduate. The first cohort of students will graduate in 2022 with degrees from both Binus University and the University of Newcastle, and have access to a global network of peers through the partnership with Nurture Higher Education.

Many outstanding graduates of the University of Newcastle are now working in Indonesia. Notable alumni include the Australian Ambassador to Indonesia Gary Quinlan AO and Noni Purnomo, President Director of Blue Bird Group, known as the largest taxi service in Indonesia.

University of Newcastle Vice-Chancellor, Professor Alex Zelinsy said “This partnership enables us to support some of our nearest neighbours, connecting Indonesian students with new education offerings that give them a competitive advantage in the workplace. We have many proud examples of Indonesian students, who after studying with us in Australia returned home to establish thriving careers that have greatly benefitted their communities. Through this partnership, we hope more Indonesian students will have access to higher education study options that help set them up for their best chance of success.”

Gatot Soepriyanto, S.E. Ak M Buss (Acc) Ph.D. Dean of Faculty of Economics said “This new program will prepare students to be ahead of the curve in an ever competitive and dynamic world. By partnering with the University of Newcastle in Australia, Binus University International is able to create a world-class learning environment for students. This two-degree program also offers an option for students to attend classes at the University of Newcastle campus in Australia or Singapore.”

Stephen Healy, Co-Founder and Managing Director of Nurture Higher Education Group and the Goal Business Education initiative, said “We are delighted to welcome Binus University International into our Global Network with the University of Newcastle, Australia. The world class Business School accreditations Binus has achieved match those of Newcastle, and we think the Top 200 World University Award from Newcastle alongside that of the BInus award will give students something unique but critically the maximum chances of recognition, employability and agility required for the future workplace. Our ability through this partnership to provide completion of the program locally makes this accessible to many more talented Indonesians wishing to seek a world class internationally recognised University education. We look forward to watching our current and future students succeed as a result of this partnership.”

The program will be officially launched during International Week at Binus University, via a virtual event on the 22nd October 2020.
