Australian Eggs has been made aware of video footage which appears to show hens being kept in outdated cage facilities allegedly at an egg farm in Queensland.
The footage shows conditions that in no way reflect standard industry practice in Australia and do not comply with Egg Standards Australia (ESA). ESA is a quality assurance scheme which provides independent auditing to ensure that best practice welfare standards are being upheld.
“Australian Eggs welcomes reports that this incident is currently under investigation with Queensland authorities,” Rowan McMonnies, Managing Director of Australian Eggs, said
“Incidents of this nature damage the reputation of compliant egg farmers across the industry and demonstrate the importance of animal welfare enforcement activities.
“The Australian egg industry is committed to constant improvement in animal welfare and has invested heavily in research, development and training to adopt state-of-the-art egg production technology and improve the welfare of egg-laying hens.
