Australian gas producer’s climate plans reflect industry commitment

Senex Energy’s announcement of a new plan to reduce emissions across its operations is yet another example of the Australian oil and gas industry walking the walk on climate change.

The company’s Decarbonisation Action Plan includes a target for the company to achieve a 30% reduction in total greenhouse gas emissions while also expanding its productive capacity to 60 petajoules (PJ) annually by the 2025 financial year, and in the longer term, achieving net zero emissions by 2040.

It is the latest in a line of industry commitments from Australian oil and gas producers. Earlier this year, for example, Cooper Energy became the first Australian producer to receive Climate Active Certification for achieving net zero emissions across its operations. Australian gas is poised to help reduce emissions not just domestically but in the form of exports, particularly in Asian markets.

The Australian Government estimates Australia’s LNG has the potential to lower emissions in LNG importing countries by around 170 million tonnes of CO2 each year by providing an alternative to higher emissions fuels – the equivalent of over one-third of Australia’s total annual emissions.

“This latest announcement from Senex provides further evidence that Australian oil and gas producers are committed to reducing emissions and achieving climate change as part of an economy-wide effort”, said APPEA Chief Executive Andrew McConville.

“This is just the latest example of APPEA members walking the walk when it comes to climate change action.

“Natural gas has an important part to play in ensuring countries around the world can meet their emissions targets into the future.

“It can provide a significantly cleaner alternative to coal-fired power, supports the continued uptake of renewables such as wind and solar, and has shown its potential as a world leader in practicable emissions reduction technologies such as hydrogen and carbon capture and storage.”
