Thinking of drinking and driving this Melbourne Cup Day? It’s a safe bet that you’ll be caught.
Police will conduct extensive driver testing to ensure that punters and non-punters alike enjoy a safe journey down the home stretch.
Superintendent Bob Gray, Officer in Charge of Traffic Support Branch, is reminding drivers to plan ahead, and consider alternative transport.
“In 2017, 19 motorists were caught driving over the legal limit, and a further 15 were detected drug driving.
“That a selfish minority of drivers chose to gamble with the safety of other road users is deeply disappointing, and completely unacceptable.
“Whether you’re toasting the Cup at Morphettville Racecourse, or enjoying festivities elsewhere across South Australia, you should expect to see police on the roads, and plan accordingly.
“Keep track of how much you’re drinking. Don’t get so caught up in celebrations that you put yourself, or others, at risk of serious injury – or worse on the road.”
Traffic restrictions will apply around Morphettville Racecourse, with speeds reduced to 40km/h along Anzac Highway and Morphett Road from 9.30am.
“Arrange a designated driver or take advantage of public transport. The rest of the nation may stop for the Cup, but we’ll be on duty, looking out for dangerous road users.”
