It’s time for Wilmar to win back the trust of the community and do the right thing by their employees and the sugar communities by covering the wages of their workforce who were unable to attend work due to the Northern Queensland flooding.
This is a company worth billions of dollars, who can easily afford to pay these workers without even having to sell one dinosaur bone.
“Many AWU members have been out helping their community recover from this natural disaster and if Wilmar cared about the sugar communities, they would do the right thing and pay their workers,” said AWU Queensland State Secretary Stacey Schinnerl.
“Wilmar has been trumpeting how much they are helping flooded communities on their social media accounts but won’t even pay their workers who are the ones on the frontline.
“Wilmar management told workers that if they wanted to get paid for the last week then they had to provide a stat dec or doctors certificate when Wilmar’s own policy provides for other forms of leave to be used.
“To add insult to injury, if an employee did provide this proof and apply for personal leave as they were instructed, then this may breach the Fair Work Act, as employees weren’t on personal leave, they were stood down at Wilmar’s direction.
“How much more damage will Wilmar’s greed do to our sugar communities?
“This is a small act that Wilmar can take to support those helping with the cleanup effort.
“Wilmar needs to stop paying lip service and start putting their money where their mouth is.”
