We’re very pleased to announce that longtime board member and supporter of our Institute, Lindsay Maxsted has been appointed a Life Governor.
Lindsay brought a wealth of corporate and governance experience to our board for more than 17 years before stepping down in December 2022.
Among his roles, he was Honorary Treasurer of the Institute and Chair of the Audit and Risk Management Committee and ensured that the organisation had a strong risk management framework with rigorous reporting.
Lindsay oversaw significant organisational milestones including the merger of the Baker Heart Research Institute and the International Diabetes Institute in 2008, delivering Australia’s first multidisciplinary organisation dedicated to tackling cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and obesity.
He also helped navigate the sale of the Institute’s clinical research subsidiary and leading phase one clinical trial facility, Nucleus Network, to Australian private equity firm, Crescent Capital Partners, in 2018. The sale provided the Institute with a corpus of funds to operate sustainably on a much greater scale in addressing cardiovascular disease and diabetes.
Chairman of the Baker Institute Board, Mr Peter Scott says the Institute is extremely grateful to Lindsay for his strong support of our philanthropic endeavours, which he led by example.
“Lindsay very generously shared his significant board expertise and experience in helping us to navigate challenges and opportunities, ensuring that the Institute is in a strong position as it looks to its centenary in 2026,” Mr Scott says.
Outgoing Baker Institute Director, Professor Tom Marwick, who served on the Board alongside Lindsay for the past several years, says we are indebted to Lindsay for all that he brought to the Board, both in a professional and personal capacity.
“Lindsay was extremely committed to our mission to enhance the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease and diabetes. This was borne out in his efforts behind the scenes over many years to support that mission,” Professor Marwick says. “I found Lindsay to be a consistent source of wise counsel, and very much exemplified the tradition of business leaders contributing to philanthropic organisations.”
