Ballarat residents can take electronic waste items to the city’s transfer station when a statewide ban on putting these items in bins starts next month.
Electronic waste, or eWaste is any item with a plug, battery or power cord that is no longer working or wanted.
On 1 July, the Victorian Government is introducing a ban on eWaste going to landfill.
That means any eWaste of any sort cannot be placed in any bin, including kerbside bins.
eWaste is growing three times faster than standard municipal waste.
It contains many hazardous and valuable materials, which do not belong in landfill.
eWaste recycling prevents dangerous heavy metals contained in electronic devices from contaminating the environment.
While some of these items are non-renewable, recycling allows many of them to be re-used.
Residents can still take these items to the City of Ballarat Waste Transfer Station, 119 Gillies Street South, Alfredton for recycling, either for free or a small fee for commercial size loads.
Batteries, mobile phones and small eWaste items may be taken to the Ballarat Library and Wendouree Library or the Phoenix Building (25 Armstrong Street North, Ballarat Central) free of charge.
A list of eWaste items, tips on how to minimise your eWaste and other locations you can take household eWaste items is at a new at the City of Ballarat website.
