Recently retired Bambra resident Sue Cole is the newest member of Surf Coast Shire Council’s Positive Ageing Advisory Committee.

Ms Cole brings the experience of more than 45 years as a health care professional to the voluntary position and replaces outgoing member Deb Campbell.

Cr Margot Smith who is a member of the Positive Ageing Advisory Committee thanked Ms Campbell for her contribution.

“Deb has made an outstanding contribution and on behalf of the committee we thank her for insights and her strong advocacy for the interests of older people,” said Cr Smith.

“We are very lucky to have had someone of the calibre of Deb on the committee and equally fortunate to have Sue join us. Sue has a great attitude and I’m confident she will prove to be a terrific addition to what is a very active and engaged group.”

Ms Cole worked as a nurse manager in Colac before retiring in 2018. She was drawn to Bambra after attending a Tai Chi class in nearby Deans Marsh in 2013.

“Tai Chi was always followed by a coffee afterwards and I made many new friends. There is such a strong sense of community in the area and people keep a real eye out for one another.

“Some people lobbied for me to join the committee and I thought why not.

“Personally I feel very positive about ageing. As a nurse on any day of the week I could name at least five people who would have given anything for the opportunity to get old so it’s given me a perspective about life,” she said.

Surf Coast Shire Council established the Positive Ageing Advisory Committee in October 2018 to provide advice to Council on its service reforms and its broader program to create an age-friendly Surf Coast Shire.
