The Barunga community is set to get new upgraded oval lights, with works currently underway.
The light upgrades are part of a $1.85 million investment in sporting infrastructure enhancements in the Roper Gulf which will also fund new multi-purpose courts in Borroloola and oval lights and associated power upgrades at Ngukurr.
Local contractor All Regions Electrical has been awarded the contract at Barunga and the team is working hard to deliver the improved oval lights before the Barunga Festival in June.
The tender for the Borroloola project is scheduled to be awarded in April 2019.
The tender for the Ngukurr project will be released this month and is scheduled to be awarded in April 2019.
The Territory Labor Government is investing $10 million into remote community sporting infrastructure enhancements throughout the Territory to support strong and healthy communities.
As stated by Minister for Tourism, Sport and Culture, Lauren Moss
We continue to invest in the Territorys community sporting assets because we know they play a vital role in building vibrant and connected communities.
We want to see more Territorians in remote communities participate in sport to improve health and well-being outcomes, and well maintained sporting facilities including ovals with good facilities, will promote participation.
We continue to work with regional councils to ensure this funding supports their key priorities and is aligned with community expectations.

Its great to see the oval lights upgrade underway in Barunga in time for the iconic festival which includes a significant sporting component including a hotly contested footy competition and attracts thousands of local and interstate visitors each year.
Upgrading the lights at the Barunga oval provides more opportunities for sporting activities, arts festivals and other community events, which will contribute to positive outcomes for families and young peoples health and wellbeing, not only in Barunga community but in the wider region.

Roper Gulf has been working through its Councillors and Local Authority members to attract investment for sporting infrastructure in Barunga, Borroloola and Ngukurr.
