At an outdoor Covid-safe Flag Raising and Citizenship Ceremony on Australia Day, 23 members of the community became Australian citizens.
The new citizens, who came from 13 countries, received their new status at a garden event in the grounds of Bayside Town Hall in Brighton.
Congratulations to all our new citizens.
Congratulations also to a famous Baysider, Dylan Alcott, who has been named the 2022 Australian of the Year.
The Paralympian and multiple Grand Slam tennis champion was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia for distinguished service to Paralympic sport, particularly to tennis, and as a role model for people with disability, and to the community through a range of organisations.
Other distinguished Bayside residents who became OAM recipients included:
- Mary Elizabeth Dawes from Sandringham for service to the community through charitable organisations.
- Alan Peterson Frees, also from Sandringham, for service to education administration, and to the law.
- Jessica Elizabeth Morrison, from Brighton, for service to sport as a gold medallist at the Tokyo Olympic Games 2020
- Dr James Taylor, from Black Rock, for service to emergency medicine, and to the community.
Our Australia Day Awards Ceremony has been postponed until March this year due to Covid concerns.
