SA Police are taking their road safety message one step further, with a series of personalised number plates being used on traffic patrol vehicles.
The eye-catching number plates have been provided to SA Police by the Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure (DPTI) as part of a cooperative road safety campaign.
Showing off the number plates for the first time today, Superintendent Bob Gray, the officer in charge of the Traffic Support Branch, said this was another way for police to provide a focus on road safety.
“We have to keep using new and innovative ways to promote our road safety message,” he said.
“Being creative with these personalised numbers is just another way of keeping the South Australian community focused on road safety.
“We believe the community will really embrace this concept which offers a simple, but consistent road safety message.”
Police Minister Corey Wingard, who attended today’s number plate unveiling, said he is very supportive of the interagency cooperation demonstrated by this initiative.
“It is important to acknowledge the cooperation and support of this joint initiative between the Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure and SAPOL,” he said.
“This is a great initiative that was first used in the Northern Territory and was very well received by the community.
“We need to use a raft of different innovative ways of keeping the road safety message fresh in the minds of every South Australian.”
The numberplates, with gold lettering on a black background, are: NOPHONE, NOSPEED, DONTSMS, BEALERT, SLODOWN, YDUI, BUCKLUP and DRVSAFE.
These are being used on marked traffic patrol vehicles that operate predominately in the metropolitan area (and will be fitted with anti-tamper screws!).
