Waverley Council is encouraging the community to plan ahead this weekend with the temperature tomorrow in Bondi Beach forecast to hit 40 degrees by 1pm.
Mayor of Waverley, Paula Masselos, said a visit to the beach in extreme conditions can be uncomfortable and that people should be aware of the risks of heatstroke, dehydration and fatigue.
There will be additional lifeguards resourcing at Waverley’s three beaches. There will also be increased daily patrols by Council Rangers of beaches and parks to assist our tens of thousands of visitors.
Other measures and tips to help the community stay safe include:
- There will be continued enforcement of alcohol-free zones and alcohol prohibited areas. Alcohol is NOT permitted at our beaches and beach parks. Alcohol and the ocean don’t mix.
- If you are planning on coming to the beach, please arrive earlier in the day when temperatures are cooler, and use public transport as parking is limited
- Keep hydrated to avoid heat stroke, especially if you have any underlying medical conditions.
- If in doubt, please consider visiting another time. It’s probably a good idea to stay indoors this weekend!
- Always follow lifeguard instructions and only swim between the flags. If you get into trouble in the water, signal for help and “Float to Survive”. Instructional video
- Only swim during patrolled hours (6am to 7pm at Waverley’s three beaches Bondi, Tamarama and Bronte)
- Please use our public places respectfully
- Our beaches are smoke-free zones
- Don’t walk dogs in hot weather or leave them tied up in the heat. Dogs need shade and hydration as well.
