Benalla Celebrates IDAHOBIT Day

IDAHOBIT progress flag

On Friday Benalla Rural City Council proudly hosted the Progress Flag Raising Ceremony in a display of community unity. This event, marking the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Interphobia, and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT), was a vibrant display of our community’s commitment to standing against LGBTQIA+ discrimination.

Deputy Mayor Cr Justin King led the event, acknowledging the significance of IDAHOBIT, stating, “Today, we stand together as a community, whether part of the LGTBQIA+ community or as allies.”

The event, which also included a community barbecue, was a powerful reminder of the societal progress made since homosexuality was removed from the International Classification of Diseases in 1990, and the ongoing need for continued advancement in LGBTQIA+ equity.

Alice Meravi, Vice President of LINE Wangaratta Inc., shared her insights on the experiences of our regional and rural LGBTQIA+ community and the intersectionality of the challenges faced.

Cr King emphasised the council’s commitment to inclusivity, stating, “Here at Benalla Rural City, we strive to create a community where all people feel accepted. We acknowledge there is still more work for us to do. This is an ongoing process, and we are committed to creating a safe and inclusive space for everyone. Benalla Rural City Council thanks all attendees for their support and looks forward to continuing its work towards creating a more inclusive community.”
