Residents across East Arnhem have received upgrades to their homes.

Eight families in Yirrkala, Ramingining, Umbakumba and Ngangalala ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾land have received improvements and extensions to the homes they live in.

Two families in Yirrkala now have extra bedrooms to alleviate overcrowding. Beverly’s family of seven were glad to have an extra bedroom built on their 3-bedroom home.

Yirrkala has received 68 new and upgraded homes since 2016, with 18 new and upgraded homes to be delivered for the community.

In Ramingining, a 3-bedroom and a 4-bedroom house were each turned into 5-bedroom homes with a larger veranda and additional bathroom. One of the homes also received a new storeroom, while the other home has a new laundry and brand new veranda slab.

Territory Labor has delivered 66 new and upgraded homes in Ramingining since coming to Government in 2016, with more new and upgraded homes underway.

Over in Groote Eylandt, three homes in Umbakumba have been upgraded with additional bedrooms and improvements throughout.

Umbakumba has received 32 new and upgraded homes since 2016, with a new 40-lot subdivision currently underway.

In the ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾land of Ngangalala, Ricky and Daraline have received improvements to their homes, which includes upgrades to the floors, new bathroom and kitchen as well as new paint job, to improve their living conditions.

Eight homes have now been upgraded in Ngangalala, with two more homes under refurbishments.

These works were done as part of the 2016-2024 $2.2 billion remote housing partnership with the Australian Government, which includes $100 million for urgent repairs and maintenance across Territory ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾lands.

The Lawler Labor Government secured $4 billion in joint investment for remote housing with the Australian Government, the four Land Councils and Aboriginal Housing NT to improve housing and reduce overcrowding in remote communities and ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾lands in the Territory.

Attributable to Minister for Remote Housing and ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾lands Selena Uibo:

“We know that housing leads to improved wellbeing across the board – this means children perform better in school, and there is improved health and mental health in the communities.

“Since 2016, our Territory Labor Government has reached a tally of about 4000 new and improved housing, changing the social landscape across the Territory.

“The new 2024-2034 $4 billion remote housing partnership with the Australian Government ensures the Territory will see more and improved homes in the next ten years, halving overcrowding in our remote communities.”
