Free remote area ‘household problem waste’ collection offered by Hawkesbury City Council recently has been a big hit with Colo Heights, Bilpin and St Albans residents, with all three events showing positive results.
Problem wastes such as paint, motor oil, gas bottles and batteries were collected at Bilpin on 19 September, Colo Heights on 5 September and St Albans on 22 August.
In total, 26 residents dropped off 1,840kg of problem waste, across the three events.
The problem waste collection allows residents who live in the more remote areas of the Hawkesbury to safely dispose of items that can otherwise pose a fire risk, health risk or potentially pollute the natural environment, including waterways.
The recent events also provided Council with an opportunity to provide residents in Colo Heights, Bilpin and St Albans with information about available grants, services and programs in relation to bushfire recovery.
Council’s annual Chemical Cleanout results were also impressive, with 565 Hawkesbury residents attending the NSW Environment Protection Authority funded Chemical CleanOut on Sunday, 9August 2020 at the Hawkesbury Showground.
Residents safely disposed of 26,567 kilograms of unwanted chemicals from their households. Paint represented 45% of all chemicals received on the day.
Other chemical items that were safely collected and disposed of on the day were motor oil (14%), car batteries (10%) and gas cylinders (10%).
The Chemical CleanOut is held annually in the Hawkesbury and is a free service. Council encourages all residents to put the annual August event in their calendars as a reminder of the opportunity to dispose of household quantities of chemicals.
Residents are also reminded that problem wastes such as paint, motor oil, gas bottles and batteries are also accepted free of charge at the Community Recycling Centre at the Waste Management Facility at 1 The Driftway, South Windsor, open 8am to 4pm, seven days a week, excluding public holidays.
