RSPCA South Australia hopes the ten black cats currently available to adopt will have better luck attracting attention from adopters at a new location 50km north of the Lonsdale shelter, where some have been languishing for more than six months.
The organisation is running a three-day pop-up adoption event – starting this Friday – at the Parabanks Shopping Centre, the first time RSPCA has held such an event north of Adelaide.
Now in its 11th year, Black Cat Appreciation Day has added poignancy this year with the passing of its creator Wayne Morris last month.
Knowing that black cats in animal shelters often struggled to find homes, Wayne started the annual observance in 2011 in honour of his sister June and her 20-year-old cat, Sinbad, who both passed away that year.
He is credited with inspiring countless people to adopt black cats.
RSPCA SA’s Cat Care team leader Jacky Barrett said she hoped people looking to adopt a cat might consider a black one as a tribute to Wayne, who died suddenly from cardiac arrest at the age of 69.
