Following recent water sampling and testing of water at both Lake Canobolas and Gosling Creek Dam, results have identified that both bodies of water contain high levels of blue-green algae.
Blue-green algae are naturally occurring bacteria that are found in our waterways and storages. The algae themselves thrive off hot weather and still water. It is still unknown how long the blue-green algae will remain at high levels in the waterways as it is dependent on a number of factors including nutrient levels, temperature, water turbidity and the amount of sunlight or cloud cover.
The algae potentially contains toxins that are harmful to humans and animals. Even if you cannot physically see the algae in the water that does not mean it is safe to go in as there are often no changes in the colour of the water.
If you are to come into contact with the contaminated water you may experience skin rashes, itchiness, sore ears, eyes and throat, asthma, numbness of lips, nausea, vomiting or diarrhoea. If you experience any of these symptoms, seek medical attention immediately.
Orange City Council advises visitors to not eat fish from the affected area and to also keep pets out of direct contact with the contaminated water.
We ask all residents and visitors to please be mindful of the situation and to please stay keep yourselves and your animals out of the water at both Lake Canobolas and Gosling Creek Dam until we can announce it is safe to do so.
Warning signs have been placed in highly visible spots at both locations so any visitors are aware of the current situation.
When the levels of the blue-green algae return to a safe level Orange City Council will advise the community and warning signs will be removed.
