A man’s body has been located following an extensive search in Hawkesbury today, as a man remains before the courts charged with murder.
In September 2024, police received a report that an 82-year-old man from Leppington had gone missing.
Officers attached to Camden Police Area Command immediately commenced investigations to locate him; however, he remained missing.
During the investigation, police identified a 67-year-old man – who was known to the missing man – who had allegedly told police conflicting information about the incident multiple times.
Following extensive investigations, police – with assistance from State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad – arrested a 67-year-old man at a home at Smithfield about 2.45pm yesterday (Thursday 24 October 2024).
The man was taken to Fairfield Police Station and charged with murder, hinder investigation serious indictable offence of other and unlawful disposal of corpse. He remains before the courts.
Following the arrest, police – with assistance from officers attached to Hawkesbury Police Area Command – executed a crime scene warrant at a property in Upper Colo where the body of the 82-year-old was believed to be buried.
Police continued to search the property today (Friday 25 October 2024), and this afternoon a body was located.
While the body is yet to be formally identified, it is believed to be that of the missing man.
A post-mortem examination will be conducted to confirm the cause of the man’s death and a report will be prepared for the Coroner.
