Have your students ever wondered where their rubbish goes? Bookings are now open for free educational tours of Council’s waste management facilities, so you can arrange for your students to see with their own eyes!
Waste Committee Chair Councillor Neil Fisher said the tours are very interesting, and a great way for young people to learn good habits.
“One of the myths of modern life has been that we can toss anything in the bin and not think about it again without any consequences,” said Cr Fisher.
“Of course, we have all come to see that this approach to waste is far from sustainable, and there are people across our Region – and the world – working hard to change their habits at home.
“These tours give young people a chance to understand exactly where their rubbish goes, and connect the dots between their habits at home and the impact they have.
“For example, students can see glass containers – just like the ones they place in their yellow-lidded bin – being crushed into tiny pieces at our Materials Recovery Centre right here in Parkhurst to be used for projects in our Region.
“They’ll also learn how much power, water, and resources can be saved by making good choices at the shopping centre, in the kitchen, and at their bins.
“And they will find out what options there are for recycling beyond their yellow-lidded bin. There are a number of items that can be dropped off for free at the Lakes Creek Waste Management Facility that their parents might not even know are recyclable!
“These tours are a great opportunity for kids to learn good habits right from the get go, and bring home some great tips and information to share with their families.
