Branch Committee FNWA Voice, Treaty, Truth Training

Branch members may be aware that Thomas Mayor – NT Branch MUA Deputy Secretary and the CFMMEU ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾ Indigenous Officer – has played a significant role in helping establish the Uluru Statement from the Heart in 2017. The Uluru Statement was the result of a major process involving Aboriginal and Torres Strait representatives from all around Australia.

Nine SA Branch Committee members (the largest representation of all participating branches) took part in training on 6-7 August to learn more about the Uluru Statement and the ‘Voice, Treaty, Truth’ campaign that flows from it. The training was held via Zoom and led by Thomas and Lara Watson (ACTU).

In summary the goal is to win a referendum vote to change the Australian constitution, in order to secure an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice to Parliament. It is not another ‘chamber’, nor does it threaten sovereignty. In the 1967 referendum the indigenous peoples successfully sought to be counted. Now those same people sought to be heard. All citizens who support decency and ‘a fair go’ should get behind this campaign.
