Breach Of Privacy Charges in Mount Ommaney, QLD

Detectives have charged a 56-year-old man with 110 offences following a string of alleged incidents where women and girls were inappropriately filmed and photographed at a shopping centre in Mount Ommaney between November 2023 and January 2024.

It will be alleged just before 11.30am on January 6, a 12-year-old girl was travelling on an escalator when a man began filming her using a small camera attached to the end of a walking stick.

The girl’s family reported the incident to police.

Following investigations by detectives from Inala’s Child Protection and Investigation Unit (CPIU), the man was taken into police custody at a shopping centre in Mount Ommaney on January 11.

Police seized the man’s camera and upon examination it will be alleged it contained a number of indecent videos and photographs of women taken in public areas in the shopping centre without their consent.

A search warrant was subsequently executed at a private residence in Jamboree Heights where police allegedly located electronic storage devices containing similar images and videos.

The man was initially charged with three counts of observations or recording in breach of privacy, one count of indecent treatment of child under 16 (take photograph) and one count attempted observations or recordings in breach of privacy.

He appeared at Brisbane Magistrates Court on February 28 where he was remanded in custody.

Upon forensic examination of all seized devices, CCTV and other evidence, detectives from Inala’s Child Protection and Investigation Unit (CPIU) charged the man with 94 additional offences this month.

In total, the man has been charged with 106 counts of observations or recording in breach of privacy, one count each of indecent treatment of child under 16 (take photograph), attempted recordings in breach of privacy, and two counts of stalking.

He remains in custody and is due to reappear at Brisbane Magistrates Court on August 23.

Investigations remain ongoing with detectives appealing for anyone with information or anyone who may have witnessed suspicious activity at a shopping centre in Mount Ommaney between November 2023 and January 2024 to contact them.
