The announcement yesterday from Your Hobart Doctors that they would take over the Greenpoint Medical Centre is a massive win for the community, and proves just what can happen when a community stands together.
Melissa Tyrell and other local leaders deserve all the praise and credit because without their passionate advocacy this result would never have been achieved.
When it was announced that Greenpoint was due to close in December it sent shockwaves through the community.
At the time the bulkbilling centre had 8,000 patients on their books, demonstrating the significance of the service, and the broad impact the closure would have in Bridgewater and surrounding areas.
It took less than a day for the community to rally and demonstrate that they would not lose this service without a fight, and they won.
This is a huge victory for the proud and passionate local community and I warmly congratulate them.
