Bringing Visitors into CBD: New Audio Tour App for Tropical Light

Listeners will have an insight into the inspiration for Bruce Munro: Tropical Light with the launch of a free audio tour app today.

The app features recordings from internationally renowned artist Bruce Munro, the five Darwin artists involved in the exhibition and local Larrakia people.

Featuring 18 recordings or ‘stops’, the app allows listeners to experience the 2.5km arts trail starting from Civic Park through the Darwin CBD to the Darwin Waterfront.

We hear the voices of Traditional Owner Jeanneen McLellan, Larrakia elders Juma Fejo, Lynette Fejo and June Mills, and Larrakia men Trent Lee and Liam Stansfield, who tell stories of seasons, totems, culture and the dreamtime.

Darwin Street Art Festival’s creative director, David Collins, also highlights some of the colourful murals on display along the exhibition path.

Local Larrakia man, Trent Lee has designed the ‘wayfinder’ stickers which feature the danggalaba (crocodile) and help to guide locals and visitors along the exhibition path.

The audio tour is a collaboration of local businesses and individuals with contributions from Captovate, Skinnyfish Music, Windup Studio, Butley Creek Films, and content creator, Ktima Heathcote.

As stated by Minister for Tourism, Sport and Culture, Lauren Moss:

“Supporting local businesses and boosting visitor numbers are key priorities of the Territory Labor Government, and it’s great to see Darwin businesses and individuals collaborate on this project to create a truly memorable experience for visitors from around Australia and the world.

“With Bruce Munro: Tropical Light just days away from opening in Darwin, we encourage locals and visitors to download the audio tour app on their smartphone before enjoying the 2.5km arts trail to fully immerse themselves in this wonderful exhibition.”

As stated by Captovate Managing Director, Michael Hawkes:

“Captovate has developed a mobile app framework that allows clients to turn walks, trails, museum tours and audio guides into mobile apps.

“The app allows users to have the story shared through rich-text, audio, images as well as video. GPS based alerts gives users a notification based on where they are. Satellite, street and terrain maps provide the user with an easy-to-use map within the app to find the next location.

“Captovate are proud to have partnered with the Tropical Light team and believe innovative technologies like this will help visitors to the Territory further enjoy their experience while here.”

As stated by Larrakia Nation Outreach Liaison Officer, David Kurnoth:

“The Larrakia are a vibrant Aboriginal nation; broadly recognised for their strengths in performance, music and art.

“We are thrilled that local Larrakia people were invited to play a part in the Tropical Light experience sharing Larrakia stories about the seasons, our culture, our totems and dreamtime through the audio tour app.

As stated by Skinnyfish Music Creative Director Michael Hohnen:

“We tried to tap into the feelings of what Darwin in the Wet Season feels like, combining characteristics of Indigenous music styles that represent this place, mixed in with sounds from the Asian cultures that exist here.

“We’ve drenched the soundtrack with a little bit of humidity, if you like, taking in all the seasonal elements that roll through this country at that time of the year; the rains, the humidity, the strong winds and the gentle winds.”
