Broome Jobs and Skills Centre to assist youth at risk

  • New Jobs and Skills Centre launched in Broome at North Regional TAFE
  • Network of 13 Jobs and Skills Centres now open across regional and metropolitan Western Australia
  • Centre will offer outreach services throughout the Kimberley region
  • The Broome Jobs and Skills Centre was officially launched today by Education and Training Minister Sue Ellery at North Regional TAFE.

The centre will work to address the Kimberley region’s unique local needs, particularly focusing on assisting youth at risk to develop the skills needed to enter the workforce.

As a key McGowan election commitment, Jobs and Skills Centres offer Western Australians access to free practical information and advice on training and employment opportunities delivered by skilled professionals with direct links to industry.

Aboriginal people are a key priority client group, and extensive local stakeholder consultation was undertaken to ensure Aboriginal people benefit from the new service delivery model.

The Broome Jobs and Skills Centre is supported by career services from Wunan Foundation and together they will work with local communities to partner with industry and support Aboriginal jobseekers and training.

Outreach services will be provided throughout the Kimberley region including in Derby, Fitzroy Crossing, Halls Creek and Kununurra.

Since opening in late November 2018, the Broome Jobs and Skills Centre (including Kununurra) has provided more than 200 services to 85 individuals, including résumé assistance, career guidance, job application support or workforce planning services.

Anna Wungundin, a local Broome resident, came to the Broome Jobs and Skills Centre seeking information on traineeship and apprenticeship opportunities, as well as résumé, interview and job application assistance. Thanks to the support Anna received at the centre, she is now undertaking a Traineeship with Life without Barriers.

Jobs and Skills Centres are complemented by a comprehensive website resource that includes a jobs notice board, qualification lists and a course search feature.
