The accessibility ramp at the Bruce Steer Pool in Bermagui has been completed, providing all-abilities water access for people with mobility impairments.
The Chair of Council’s Access and Inclusion Advisory committee, Rosemary Oates said the project will significantly improve the amenity of the pool for people with mobility issues.
“The completion of the ramp is the final part of the Bruce Steer Pool Coastal Accessibility project, which has transformed this beautiful sea pool area into an all-abilities destination for residents and visitors alike,” Ms Oates said.
Council’s Manager, Leisure and Recreation, John Grady, said Council is committed to improving accessibility across the shire, with Bruce Steer Pool identified as a focus location for providing all-abilities water access.
“The new 40 metre-long accessible-compliant ramp with handrails, and other features completed last year such as accessible amenities and improved accessible parking, complement the all abilities playground completed in Bermagui earlier this year.”
Member for Bega, Andrew Constance, said it was fantastic to see the ramp completed well ahead of the warmer summer months.
“There is little doubt that the unique, often rugged, coastal environment defines for many the sense of place in the Bega Valley, but up until now it has severely restricted and in many cases prevented those with mobility restrictions from enjoying the activities many take for granted,” Mr Constance said.
“The installation of this ramp means a large number of locals and visitors alike can now enjoy the ocean in a safe way for the first time. It’s extremely exciting.”
The new ramp and handrails provide a stable platform and meet accessibility design standards. At lower tides it provides access to view the tidal rock shelf and shallow rock pools. At higher tides it has a depth of 900mm enabling water access for people with limited mobility. Equipment will likely get wet if going into the water and some people may need specialised water-accessible mobility aids.
The accessible ramp is the final element in the Bruce Steer Pool Coastal Accessibility project, which also included new public amenities, accessible parkland pathways, picnic shelters, park furniture, landscaping, stairway link to upper level, and accessible car park line-marking.
The project was made possible by funding of over $575,000 from the Restart NSW Fund, as well as a Council contribution of nearly $60,000.
