The Territory Labor Government is investing an extra $10.1 million ongoing funding for more regional and remote police officers.
The funding will support the Remote Policing Implementation Plan which includes more police officers on the ground to bolster regional and remote patrol activities, more support to increase the capacity and capabilities of our remote stations and stronger community engagement.
The remote and regional police funding is part of the NT Government’s $510 million injection into Police, Fire and Emergency Services in 2022 – the biggest ever spend on police in the Territory’s history. It is a $6.4 million increase on last year’s police budget.
Budget 2022 will also support:
The ongoing recruitment of more police throughout the Territory; Community Safety and crime prevention;The expansion and upgrading of the Northern Territory CCTV network, and monitoring staff; Road Safety Services; and Continuation of the School Based Police Program.
The Remote Policing Implementation Plan will include 21 police officers and 30 Aboriginal Liaison Officers (ALOs) for the permanent establishment of the Community Resilience and Engagement Command.
The Community Resilience and Engagement Command is also an important new initiative, which will help Northern Territory Police, Fire and Emergency Services (NT PFES) connect with indigenous communities.
Aboriginal Liaison Officers are a vital part of the Northern Territory Police, Fire and Emergency Services. Their knowledge and cultural understanding will provide stronger community engagement and better problem resolution pathways.
