Budget 2023 – Investing in Our Future, Delivering for Territorians – Supporting our fire fighters

4 May 2023

The Territory Labor Government is bolstering resources for front line emergency services with an $11.5 million commitment to the NT Fire Service.

The funding will go towards recruiting more fire fighters, creating a dedicated facility to train new recruits and to purchase two new fire trucks capable of accessing high-rise buildings.

The new fire trucks will improve fire and rescue capability and support changing service delivery demands resulting from increasing urbanisation and growth in medium and high-density residential development and infrastructure.

Our fire fighters provide a vital service to Territorians and this investment will give them the resources they need to protect the community.

Budget 2023 includes:

– $5 million to implement a firefighter roster relief factor and recruit additional fire fighters

– A commitment to purchase two new 35-metre aerial fire appliances, at a combined estimated cost of $4.2 million

– $2.3 million to refurbish and convert the old Palmerston Fire Station into a fit for purpose training station for recruit, promotion and organisational training.

Last year the Territory Labor Government opened the new $25 million Palmerston Regional Fire, Rescue and Emergency Services Complex at Howard Springs, allowing for expanded and improved service delivery to the Palmerston and rural regions.

The opening of this facility has allowed for the old Palmerston Fire Station located on Emery Avenue to be re-purposed as a training and recruitment centre for fire fighters.
